Interview to Tiiu Kiik

Tiiu Kiik: “I just hope that listeners find something from any song, that touches his or her deeper feelings – sadness, peace, joy, dance lust, yearning, love”

November 17, 2011. Tiiu Kiik has the amiability to grant a small interview for all the friends of  Pep1000 channel. Thanks Tiiu!!

Pep1000: What do you think that someone who lives to 3.000 km from Estonia should be precisely the administrator of a channel of spreading of the Estonian music in english?

Tiiu Kiik: Yes. This is a very nice idea – it gives more fresh and maybe even cleaner overview of Estonian music. Info in English gives better opportunity to introduce Estonian music to the whole world.

Pep1000: Internet has made possible that great people know your work from the whole world… but many people say to me that they have problems to buy music of Estonian singers from out of Estonia. There were not prepared the Estonian stores for this revolution?

Tiiu Kiik: I dont know about that. Many musicians sell their work in internet – in bandcamp and itunes for example. There were some problems with Paypal as well but for now it is possible to use Paypal in Estonia also.

Pep1000: Is it difficult for an Estonian artist to be famous in the world of the music? Do you believe that if your you had born in another country it would be much easier?

Tiiu Kiik: Good question. So and so. I know at least one musician who is very well known outside of Estonia but here – nobody even knows his name. And also i know musicians who live in a big country but are most loved only in a little place like Estonia. And many good musicians from Estonia have lived in other countries and they are here again  without big fame. Why? 🙂

Pep1000: We have seen a major change in your music from your previous bands so much more electronic now. Your current style is the one you like best?

Tiiu Kiik: Current style suits me much more and this is my music that i do on my own and i enjoy it.  I also enjoyed these bands, especially Forgotten Sunrise and i still like metal, industrial, ambient and classical music, but i think i am too soft and quiet type to play and give concerts with these kind of bands.

Pep1000: You know that your sweet and thin voice is your better weapon. Do you want that the public prefer your songs, your voice, lyrics or everything in general?

Tiiu Kiik: Hmm. My voice and songs together primarily.

Pep1000: Do you dedicate many weekly hours to writing songs and to composing them?

Tiiu Kiik: Depends. Sometimes yes.  But for the last few months i have not had any inspiration.

Pep1000: Don’t understand how you could do two albums in one year (2010)… How could you do this?

Tiiu Kiik: Haha. Well – some songs were written already earlier. I was really inspired and i just discoverd nice programm  -Garage Band– and also falled in love with it.

Pep1000: With your last album “Oled ilus” I see more deep in your songs. “Output” is a great song that makes the listener relax… What reaction do you expect on your listeners with your music?

Tiiu Kiik: Well, I just hope that listeners find something from any song, that touches his or her deeper feelings – sadness, peace, joy, dance lust, yearning, love.

Pep1000: Many Estonian artists try every year to qualify for the “Eesti laul”. Unjustly in the last year your song “Second chance” was not classified. Do you think to go to the contest in the future? Is “Eesti laul” the door of entry in Europe for Estonian artists?

Tiiu Kiik: “Eesti Laul” is a good opportunity to reach more farther but it is not the only way. I am not sure if I am interested in Eesti Laul anymore. Time will tell!

Pep1000: Finally I would like you to say something to someone who knows you and still wants to know your work. Thanks for your words and your time!. We hope yours work with great interest!

Tiiu Kiik: I wish you all love and joy of living, of dancing and of music. And thank you all for your friendship!
